Alan,
According to Machinery's Handbook, a #5 or #6 set screw takes a
0.072 inch outside diameter spline. A #8 set screw takes a 0.096
inch outside diameter spline. In the McMaster Carr catalog both of
these sizes are in the six-flute series of spline (Bristol) wrenches.
So, they "should" be the two smallest keys in your 10-key set.
So much for theory. The knobs on my SX-42 have #6-32 setscrews, and
a Xcelite #99-63 driver fits them. That is supposedly a 0.069 inch
diameter, 4-flute spline. (That spline also works on my SX-71). and
it should be the smaller of the two 4 spline keys in your 10-key
set. Sorry I don't have an S-38 to check.
IF somebody has previously buggered the setscrew, trying to turn it
with a hex wrench, the correct spline wrench may no longer fit.
73 & Good luck,
Chuck N7RHU
