[Hallicrafters] Novice Seeking Recapping Advice

Hi Rudy,

Granted it would be easier to replace only the caps but I found that most of
the old carbon resistors in my SX-28 were way out of spec. So I took the
time and replaced everything with good high quality components. Replace them
with metal oxide or metal film resistors and there is no reason why you
can't replace them with a little higher tolerance ones like replacing 1/4
watt with 1/2 watt and so on. Yes this is an extra expense but your efforts
will pay off in the long run. Don't skimp on nothing. especially in areas
that are hard to reach. My SX-28 has an RF section that has sections that
have to be taken apart in order to replace anything so I just went ahead and
replaced all the caps and all the resistors including the silver micas
because everything was out of tolerance. I will also be replacing the silver
micas everywhere else in this unit because most of them are out of spec too.
I don't think it will matter whether you desolder each piece or not. I just
cut the lead and put in the new part. Just make sure that you replace any
insulative coverings on the leads of your parts. Also, when replacing caps
that go to ground always make the lead that connects to the ground side as
short as possible. This will minimize the occurrence of noise and or
oscillations in the circuit.

My point is you will only get back what you put into it. If you plan on
keeping this radio it will pay off in many ways. less drifting, better
sensitivity, ETC. and once your done you will have a nice radio.

Good Luck!

Rob

I am planning to begin my first restoration project on an SX110 that I
purchased on Ebay. I have not done a restoration before and would
appreciate any advice anyone could offer. The unit is in very good
shape and after doing a general cleaning I plan to recap it. To replace
the capacitors should I unsolder them completely or can I cut the
original leads leaving the leads soldered in place and splice in the new
capacitors? It seems that splicing would be easier but is it the best
way to do the job? Should I replace all the resistors or should I
replace only those that test out of tolerance? Any guidance anyone can
offer in tackling my first project would be appreciated. Thanks, Rudy
