Several possibilities on the burnt coil including a
lighting strike and the antenna coming in contact with
the AC mains. Also, someone transmitting with a
"jammed" antenna relay.

If you can't find a replacement you might be able to
rewind the coil using the same gauge wire (or as close
to it as you can get). Since this is the r.f. coil it
is not as critical as the oscillator coil in winding a
new one. Just count the number of turns of the
original wire and replace. If the coil form is too
badly burned to reuse then make a new form from all
sorts of things including PVC pipe, a dowel rod, etc.

To eliminate the possibility of this happening again
just be careful with the antenna.

Here is my problem. I removed the cover of the
alignment section and found that the antenna coil for
band 1 (am broadcast band) is burnt to a crisp!
Everything else looks OK. I have three questions.
First, what could have caused this? Second, What do I
do to make sure this does not occur in the future?
Third, and most important, where can I get a
replacement? The Hallicrafters part number is 51B1088.
Does anyone have a spare from a parts radio, or is
there some other source? Please steer me in the right
direction. I am willing to buy one from someone if
they have one.
