Hi Rich,
    I suspect that almost all of us who've done an SX-42 have run into the
same learning experience.  I sure did hit my head over it.  I don't have
an SX-42 now, did one fully, had another but chickened out and sold it as
a project.  (The buyer did a beautiful job).  But, seems like the
bandspread dial goes "both ways" from the set point, depending upon the
band.  I don't think the manual was much help in deciding where things
should be upon re-assembly or alignment.  They probably figured nobody'd
ever have to disassemble them.
