[Hallicrafters] SX-9

Good evening to the group,

I was working on an SX-9 today and  I encountered something I haven't seen 
before.  Between the volume control  and the grid of the 1st audio tube there is 
a cup shaped device with a spring  metal contact.  It is shown on the 
schematic I got from Riders.  It  almost  looks like the type of cup that holds a 
galena crystal in the old  crystal sets.  Can anyone tell me what this  is?
