Hi Julian 
It would be nice if you would point out that the .PDF and DJVU files   on 
your website are BAMA (Boatanchors Manual Archives ) downloads(BAMA has been  a 
godsend to people in the Boatanchor restoration community) .As far  the 
circuitry that was removed that   was definitely a shunt limiter  using a 6AL5 a more 
effective noise limiter than the shunt .
