[Hallicrafters] Speaker values

The biggest problem I've seen with R-46B cabinets
seems to lie with the silver.
This is because the speakers weren't primed before
they were painted, at least it was with two I have
encountered.
The silver flakes off.
Refinishing the silver is easy. First, take the
speaker out of the cabinet. Then, scrape and sand off
the silver. It helps to put a layer of masking tape
around the border to protect the gray; DON'T leave tha
masking tape on any longer than a couple of hours or
it will probably stick so hard it will pull the gray
paint off.
Be sure to sand the silver area to bare metal with 400
grit (600 if you are in no hurry) so as to impart some
scratches to be the "teeth" for new paint to grab.
Mask the entire rest of the cabinet with tape and
newspaper.
Spray on silver paint. RustOleum makes a silver,
actually more of a pewter, that is real close. There
is NO "standard" or "correct" silver color; I'd be
willing to bet the stuff varied by time of day, day of
week and phase of moon. It was probably mixed with a
canoe paddle in a 55 gallon drum in a dark corner of
the plant.
Remove the masking tape right after you paint the
silver.
The paint job will be better than the original.
