There are presently two R-46Bs at auction with starting prices below what I
had mentioned. There are two others where the auctions were completed that went
for $113. and $43. each. I think this averages out at about wher I said.
Don't forget, too, that these are auction prices and you have to figure bidding
wars and last minute "gotta have thats."
Hamfest prices as well as the ARRL and eHam sites will be somewhat lower.
Also, the R-46B is not rare and don't let anyone hike the price on you by
telling you that.
There are 3 things to watch for on the R-46B:
The condition of the speaker and is it original?
The condition of the front panel.and lettering. The two tone paint job will
be expensive to reproduce and the cost of screening the lettering has to be
considered. If the panel is good, a professional painter should be able to
refinish the rest of the cabinet if needed. It may be necessary to sand, rather to
bead blast the remainder of the cabinet to protect a really nice front panel.
The condition of the flocked screen covering the speaker.
A pristine speaker may be hard to find and more expensive than others, but my
original figures were for an average speaker as may be found at a hamfest. If
you are willing to do some work, cheaper ones may be had if you loook for
them.
