John,
Take out the four nuts that hold in the board on which
the speaker is mounted. Remove the speaker and board.
Be careful not to lose the bolts which will drop out
of the front of the cabinet; they have knurled heads
and square sections (like carriage bolts) behind the
heads. They are unique and irreplaceable.
Once this is out, I think you will find that there are
some pieces of angle bolted into the front of the
cabinet; these hold the louvers into place. Take out
the nuts and the angles come off, then the louver
assemblies will come out.
The louvers should not be painted. They are
supposedly stainless steel. Clean them with very
light sandpaper (400-600 grit) and steel wool, and a
LOT of patience. It is not a quick fix in most cases.
You can probably clean the wrinkle paint with
Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner (works wonders!)
and make it look very nice indeed, unless the paint is
damaged.
If you need to repaint, black wrinkle (yeah, I know
it's gray, bear with me!) can be ordered from CarQuest
auto stores. Follow the directions and DO NOT HURRY.
After that dries, overspray it LIGHTLY with a gray
paint; go easy so as not to fill up the wrinkles.
Some of the aerosol gray enamels from hardware stores
are fine for this, especially "Premier" multipurpose
enamel from Sentry Hardware, which looks very nice.
If you just have to have an "exact" match, try using
hobby paint. Testors makes several "aircraft" and
"armor" colors that can provide a starting point; look
at "Feldgrau" (German field gray) and "RLM Gray"
(German Luftwaffe gray). These can be darkened with a
dab of black or lightened with white. They are flat
finishes. If you want a semi gloss finish, mix some
Testors "Glosscote" into the paint. This should be
airbrushed of course.
