Id start by checking voltages and resistances to ground at the tube pins.
Also try headphones if they bypass the audio amp.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] S85 Repair
Im trying to get an S85 going. The front end seems to be working, it has
faint audio. I have replaced all the paper caps in it, and checked all the
tubes. The 6H6 when removed or replaced with a known good one makes no
difference - so it seems the problem is in the detector circuit. Any clues
as to what to do next?
