Good point, Glenn.  I didn't mention that the same 6.3 VAC filament 
xformer was used to power the filaments circuit.  Hence the 6.3 VAC 
xformer had to be pretty hefty.  However, in that era, it was easier to 
come up with high current filament xformers than high current DC 
supplies.  If I also remember, there were often some small chokes in 
series with the primary of the vibrator xformer.  If you didn't take 
them out before applying 6.3 VAC, they smoked!
