Thanks for all the info.  I checked my SX-100 and it does indeed have a 
500 ohm output.

As for the R-42,  I'll work on it this summer, get it looking nice.

There's a sticker missing on the back but the the Hallicrafters button 
is on the front. I think the feet are orginal and all the little screws 
are there.  When I take it apart for painting, I will make sure that I 
don't lose any.

I saw a picture of one of these on the web, there're pretty crude on the 
inside.

The big flaw is the missing binder posts, which should be attached to an 
also missing bakelite subpanel.  I'm thinking I'll just forget about 
replicating that and just make something that works and looks OK.

This thing is huge.  It looks way outsized compared to the receiver.
