[Hallicrafters] Another SX-100 question.

You can match the 500 ohm speaker to the 3.2 ohm
output of the receiver with a simple audio
transformer. There are transformers available from
Mouser and other suppliers. Also, a 6.3 volt filament
transformer usually works very well for this. Connect
the 6.3 volt winding to the output of the receiver and
the primary (120 VAC) to the speaker. For receivers
with 8 ohm outputs you can use a 12.6 volt transformer
and get a slightly better match (but you can still use
the 6.3 volt transformer and a 12.6 volt transformer
for 3.2 ohm output).
As for paint:
Mike Shelton (NC Total Electronics) went out of the
paint business several years ago. Therefore you have
to come up with something else and here is my
response:
Here is my "canned" response to paint!
I get all of the paint that I use on "boat anchor"
cabinets computer matched at my local Sherwin-Williams
store. I have found that acryllic satin finish paint
comes out pretty darn close to the original finish.
The paint runs around $11 a quart.
So far every cabinet that they have matched has been
"right on", including the Collins St. James gray.
You will need either a paint gun, or, if your local
store happens to be one that has the ability to "load"
spray cans then you can go that way. Of course having
spray cans loaded is going to add to the price of the
paint.
I normally drop off a cabinet, cabinet lid, etc., of
what I want to be matched. At least at my local
store, which tends to be very busy, I get my paint
either late in the afternoon or the next morning. If
your store isn't that busy, they might be able to do
it for you while you wait.
Also, some automotive parts stores also have paint
matching. However, what they use is often lacquer or
enamel, both of which do not dry to as "hard" a finish
as acryllic.
By the way, the acryllic paint that I buy does clean
up with water! You don't have to worry about paint
thinner, lacquer thinner, etc.
Now, for the texture: I use Rusteoleum American
Accents Stone Creations to give me a crackle. Also,
Rustoleum has two other paints that might be used.
They are "Hammered" and "Texture". These do NOT give
a real deep type of finish. However, they do work as
an undercoat in many application.
An additional note: The original paint usually fades
over the years. If you remove screws, trim, etc.,
from the cabinet you will usually find the original
color underneath. That is what I try to do and have
them match the area that was "hidden" for decades.

Apparently the R-42 wasn't meant to be used with the
SX-100. The web says that it's 500 ohms and works
better with earlier Hallicrafters and even the Collins
that used 500 (or is it 600) ohm speakers.
Although the front is good; original grill and the
Darth Vader mouth are near perfect (age considered),
it'll take a few hours to bring it back to show-off
condition.
Here're the questions
Repaint (and if so, what's a source of the "right"
paint? And what's the technique?)
Keep and use, as is, but what about that 500 ohm
mismatch?
