When I purchased the SX-28 I am currently using, it
had a sort of a bad schmutz all over the front panel. 
Removed panel, cleaned with a solution of water and
"TSP" brand cleaner.  Went from being "an ugly black
thing" as a friend's wife described it to the nice
bluish-gray that the 1940 SX-28s were painted.  The
rusty tuning capacitor box cleaned up nicely with
naval jelly.  Now I just need to find time between all
my other projects to re-cap it....
