I wish to thank everyone who responded with ideas on antennas for SWL; 
they are some great ideas.  I read somewhere on the Internet about a 
kind of Dipole antenna where ½ the wire is in the air and the other ½ 
is buried underground. And the underground wire is an insulated wire.  
Also thanks for the tip about an antenna lightning arrestor.

In the late 50s and early 60s I worked in radio and TV repair.  We 
used to install up to 40-foot masts on top of a house with twin Trio 
88s on top, sometimes with a rotor.

I got my insulators from jamesrnz in Nebraska and the Radio Shack 
antenna wire from an online pawnshop in Texarkana.
