[Hallicrafters] SR-500 Console Wanted

Hi David,

It is not known if Hallifcrafters even built the SR-500 console. Chuck
Dachis says "source unknown"

I have heard from several who worked for Hallicrafters, one an engineer and
the other a production worker, that only three consoles existed. A lot of
gray clouds the truth about the SR-500.

I am in regular contact with Dr. Max De Henseler, HB9RS and he does read
this list. Perhaps Max will send me an e-mail on the SR-500, what he thought
of the one he operated and what became of it.

I wonder now, David, with the Vatican not wanting any Amateur Radio station
there, what has, or shall, become of the equipment? Personally, leaving
religion out of it, it seems almost sinful to destroy this piece of for real
history. It is simply wrong, at least to me, to deny the many who used the
equipment to save lives and relay critical information from one country,
agency, group or individual to the destination point their just dues for
risking their lives to help bring peace to a troubled world. After all,
Amateur Radio is for 'all' mankind, not just those who wear velvet robes and
sit on thrones not made of porcelin. Amateur Radio is not about expounding
ones faith or anything else religious or political, it is a hobby for fun
and when the need arises, to provide needed communications to all peoples of
all creeds, beliefs and countries of origin.

I am saddened by the stand the Vatican has taken when it comes to Amateur
Radio. Who can say, but just maybe the Hams who operated when night was the
most dark, perhaps saved the Catholic religions most holy place.

So David, what is the rest of the story about why the Vatican received the
SR-1000 and what became of it? The HHRP CD that comes with the rare original
video of Bill Halligan, Sr. taken in NYC in November of 1983, contains 118
rarely seen photos, original text transcripts, original articles, speeches
with hand written margin notes, personal letters etc. It has an entire
section devoted to the equipment that was donated by Bill Halligan, Sr. of
Hallicrafters to the Vatican for the Vatican City station, HV1CN. Remember
HV1SJ who always signed as Strawberry Jam?
