You guys are geniuses. I can only stand in awe. Thank you for your help.

I had forgotten about the double-conversion aspect. I went to the 2nd
Mixer and saw that a prior owner had subbed a 6BY6 for the 6BE6 that
should have been there. I guess that's a permissible sub but I'm always
wary of subs and tube quality in mixer stages. I found a spare 6BE6 in
my parts bin, inserted it, and now I have some action on Bands 3 and 4.

The signals are fairly weak but not too bad That set is loaded with
black beauties, wax caps and little chiefs. I'm hoping that once I
change some of them out, I'll get a big improvement. I haven't even
gotten my magnifying glass out yet to check for fried resistors. I guess
I'll have to go in and see what other tube subs the prior owner made.

I'll keep you posted and undoubtedly be back with more questions.

I'm sort of in a Hallicrafters phase. I recently met a ham who is
downsizing and he sold me three project sets: this SX-71, the SX-42
we've been discussing and an SX-62. I paid $200 for the lot. So far,
I've gotten the SX-62 working very well, the SX-42 is on its way and the
SX-71 is starting to look promising.
