Heathkit put out a very low-cost BANK of related test gear.  They all were
in blue boxes with white panels, and included a VTVM, Audio Gen, RF Gen,
Signal Tracer, and some other stuff I can't recall.  All of it operated from
+9vdc & -9vdc (both), and were quite light.  I sold a set for an SK buddy's
estate, and they worked pretty darned well.  For the guy just beginning in
this insanity, it might be a good starter set.
