The technology was developed using helium neon laser tubes to get the
info off laser disks. the things probably used he ne tubes instead of
solid state lasers while trying to get audiophiles to buy them.

Sure did.

The buyers are probably the same folks who believe that colored markers 
make their cd's sound better.  The people with the five-figure 5 watt 
class A monoblock tube amps and Monster cable to their speakers AND to 
their power outlets.
