Hi readers,
You do not tell if there is still noise from the transformer with the rectifier tube removed...
If there is no more noise in this condition (i.e. 5U4 being out of its socket), a common cause for this kind of problem is a worn filter capacitor. These can show a permanent resistance of a quite low value, partially shorthing the output of the rectifier and cause the death of the transformer. Very common failure on all vintage electronic equipment.
So I would check this electrolytic cap first!!
