I say: Such a list is a very subjective and high risk proposition! Who or
what regulates it from an individual, and maybe several of his pals, from
hammering some Ham because they "think" they got less than they expected? It
is a life long chore to get a good name, but it can be destroyed in a minute
by someone who is upset.
While I personally do not want any part of such a list, as it invites
character defamation simply because it exists, I believe talking to the
seller by telephone is perhaps the best way to go before making a purchase.
EBAY invites exploitation because for the most part it is totally a computer
operation. This is why human organs, hookers, illegal satellite box decoders
etc.were allowed to be advertised!
I also know it is fairly easy to rig the 'feedback' system to make it appear
as one wants. A number of EBAY thieves figured this out five years ago and
had ratings of a thousand positive. Just waited until they had all the
suckers convinced, then sold a load of junk, collected the cash and were
long gone! When it is mail order, and EBAY technically is, and when the
object crosses state lines, rules change. What might have been simple to
resolve within a state, simple being only a relative term here!, is nearly
impossible to resolve outside of your state of residence.
Who is going to spend from $3,000-$10,000 for legal fees to collect for a
bade purchase of $350? Even so, if you win, then collecting is quite another
matter!
While it would be nice if there was a place where the "real" character of
another human could be read, it only exists in dreams of fantasy. Some human
will explit it, count on it!
Overall, the number of intentional scams and deliberate misrepresentations
of items for sale is a fraction of the total. Yes I know, it is easy to say
when one is not the victim. However, I have been there too. Just the same,
the creation of such a list is simply too subjective and invites misuse. If
most of us get the cobwebs of our own self-dellusion out of the way, and
think about what we are intending to buy, educate ourselves about it, ask
good questions and hear what is said, as well as what is 'not' said, we can
do quite well at protecting ourselves from the thieves.
