There's a good discussion at http://discountbox.com/pk_fmpl.htm regarding
how to do it, and what the pluses and minuses are of using foam, especially
regarding psi ratings (the number of sq inches of support required).
Apparently, the foam sold as insulation at HD, etc. is the same basic
material.

I've never tried to this myself, and have relied on a local professional in
Arlington, TX that does foam in place (or other appropriate methods) for
really heavy stuff -- A-line gear, HRO's, and the like.
http://www.packstore.com/.  They custom cut boxes, do crating, etc.  Not
cheap, by any means, but I've never had anything arrive at its destination
with so much as a piece of lint on it.
