[Hallicrafters] S-8 question

I remember when Owen, W5LFL first got on 2M from the Space Shuttle. The
plan was to listen for him on odd minutes (or maybe it was even - I
don't really remember) and transmit on the other. I was in there
swinging with everybody else, but at one point I accidentally began
transmitting when I should have been listening. I figured it out pretty
quickly and just said "OOPS - Sorry" and got off. I thought that said
it all, but one of the fellows felt obliged to take up the rest of that
minute chastising me and explaining my blunder.
I don't recall who that ham was but I have to suspect that he is alive
and well and active on the Hallicrafters list.
In an attempt to move the conversation back to radios, let me pose a
nagging question about my oldest Halli-rig, an S-8. Did Hallicrafters
have anything more to do with this than marketing? It is usually
suggested that the S-8 was built by Howard or RCA, and it does have the
look of an RCA radio to me. It is very similar to the Super-7 and a
number of other all-American rigs built around the same time (c. 1935)
and marketed by Montgomery Ward and many others. What's with that?
Cheers, Rich
