Hi Julian,
I had a similar problem but just with the AM broacast band. The radio would  
sound great and after a few minutes no audio. The problem turned out being a  
cold solder joint on an rf coil connection. You should probe with a plastic 
tool  and with some gentle poking in the rf section you might find what I did.
