There are at least one and maybe two S-27/S-36?RBK
receivers aboard the USS NC, down in "Radio 1" which
is just off the area for the fire-control computer,
below decks. If you visit the ship, be sure to look
for it because it is easily missed. Well worth a
look, too... lots of goodies like RBA/RBB/RBC, RAO,
TBS, a humongous LR freq meter, and the huge patch
panel for routing antennas to different transmitters
and receivers. I can't recall whether there are any
other Hallis aboard.
The Azalea Coast ARC in Wilmington continues work on
restoration of the ship's historic gear, including
transmitters. They get on the air every now and then,
on CW, using the restored gear, using the call sign
NI4BK -- USS NC used the call sign NIBK during WW2.
The club's web site is www.ac4rc.org, and they have
numerous pictures of the restoration work.
This past Field Day, I worked WW2LST/MM, on 80 CW
about 3 in the morning (yawn) -- this is a restored
WW@ LST (hence the call) with a lot of operational
gear from the period; but they were running some
modern stuff when I worked them...
