Mike,
That is pretty harsh. They are indeed delicate mechanisms and the
potential repairer is well advised to do a bit of soul searching before
diving in, but if you think you're up to it why not try? At worst you
are out an (already broken) meter and will have to track down a
replacement. I have resurrected more than I have had to replace by a
healthy margin so I'm a fan of repair.
I will concede, though, that I wouldn't try it without my trusty stereo
microscope!
