Hi Mike,

What you say is most probably true. Look at all the outfits who built
R-390s, lt reads like a who's who of manufacturers. I wonder how many actually did
build them.

The seller I got this one from was displaying a very sick looking 51J-2 in it
but it did not look like the cabinet was built for that receiver. I picked up
the 51J for a friend but since I collect Hallicrafters, I wanted the cabinet,
hopefully to house my homeless R-274. Unfortunately, the receiver is 5 inches
deeper than the cabinet so that kills that idea. I am still trying to figure
what was supposed to live in there.

I am beginning to believe that Hallicrafters made the cabinet for some non-
Hallicrafters receiver under some government contract. Interestingly enough is
the fact that the tag appears to be glued to the cabinet. The tag has 4
mounting holes in it but they are not used and there are no matching holes in the
cabinet. Strange.

<< I have a friend in southeastern NC who once owned a
Collins R-388 (51J-3) which had a data tag on the
front panel stating the manufacturer as "The
Hallicrafters Co.)" (!!!!!)  Nowhere in any of the
R-388 production lists have I seen reference to Halli
building any, but this one apparently was. >>
