So far I only have one radio, a SX99 and feel that radios are like
wives. One should only have one. But some people do not learn until
later in life so then there is a rush to He-Hay to get down to legal
limits.
I cannot understand why even the last Hallis still mostly used those
big ole octal tubes when everyone else went to the more modern and
IMHO better minature 7/9 pin tubes. Did Hallicrafters not know about
6V6 output tubes? Well after I unbox my SX99 I will install a 6V6 so
that I can hear it for more than 20 feet. And I painted it black
because I could not determine what color it should be. And I will
have someone with a commercial laser printer reproduce the
silver/white area around the knobs with a silver/white plastic that
will cover the old numbers. I have scanned in this area and used
Photoshop to clean up the scraches and rubbed off numbers. How-some-
ever if a purist looks he will notice the off color, a new
silver/white area around the knobs and that the radio plays too loud
because I have used a 6V6 instead of a 6F6. And if he looks closer he
might discover that I have taken apart my 6H6 and removed the glass
innards once it dies and put in those tiny 1N34 diodes. 6H6s never
really die though, do they?
However I do not plan on installing a tuning-eye tube as back-up for
my S-meter.
Good cheers to all,
Jim Winkelr
