[Hallicrafters] A good SWL receiver

Ummmm, take your choice, they're all over the place.

Digital radios are nice, 'cause you KNOW what freq you're exactly on, but
half the fun of SWL DXing was with a good old round knob... you would hear
stuff, that you might miss with digital finger-pushin'. Still, out in the
shop, I have an older Realistic (why that name, I'll never know) DX-440. I
think it was made by Sangean, but not sure. That sucker is stable, fairly
sensitive, and has a sort-of bandpass filter (actually, it's a treble/bass
selector switch), which does have the effect of narrowing it down for SSB
and CW. It makes a great service monitor, and my trick for setting the
varible BFO, is to select the appropriate WWV station - zerobeat the
carrier, then everything else you listen to, is on freq.

good luck - there's tons to choose from.... now, go get your ham ticket!
