[Hallicrafters] Wax on RF Coils (SX-42)

I have used the tip of a small soldering gun or a small shanked soldering
iron.
The "wax" is usually beeswax. Regular paraffin is not suitable as normal chassis
heat will melt it or soften it up too much. Heat the slug carefully and it can be turned easily.
One must be careful not to burn or overheat the coil form itself. Most of them
are made from a thin phenolic cardboard like substance or in some cases
plastic. Most of the old Hallicrafters sets used a laminated phenolic coil form.
(As I remember.)
I have had my best luck with a Weller 100 watt sized tip in the soldering gun.
Don't keep the trigger pulled for a long time! "pulse" the power until the wax
just melts and the core heats enough to turn it easily with a diddle stick.
(appropriate alignment tool)

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Wax on RF Coils (SX-42)
| Early I posted a request for SX-42 parts. The reason I need them is
| that I have destroyed a couple RF coil cores. The cores are locked
| with some sort of wax-like material.
| Is there some general wisdom for adjusting these without damaging
| them? Perhaps a heat gun to loosen them? They seem very fragile.....
|
| Thanks
