[Hallicrafters] SX-24 Questions

Hello,

I'm new here (and new to Hallicrafters!) and have my first SX series radio.
After a couple of days of miscellaneous work - lose wiring, cleaning electrical contacts,
fixing one previous owner's audio "hack" - someone bypassed the audio transformer
and added one with a speaker inside the chasis, and it now comes on, brings up a
local station on 1380 khz and stays rock-solid without any perceivable drift.

But here's my problem.........when I switch to any of the crystal positions on the AVC switch,
I get no audio. The receiver appears to be dead, and moving either tuning dial doesn't make
the S meter rise. Associated with this, is that on Band 2, 3 and 4, there doesn't appear to
be any audio unless I switch in the BFO. I'm thinking either the test antenna (ok, wire coathanger!)
isn't big enough (the RF stage) or I have a bad cap and need a good ground.

When I touch the ground connector on the back of the receiver with my finger, I get some
volume and "radio noises" out of turning either dial without the BFO being on on any band.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Darryl
