And a very valid one, too. You basically confirmed what I said in my
response (I was still typing when you were sending) - the SX-28
receivers are old technology and not the best at many things, but the
things they do excel at are the precise reason I love mine. For the
casual, easy listening times, it's the best to me. Or, when audio
really does matter!
When I want to do serious digging or need to block out interference
with a bullet proof, drift-free receiver, I flip on the R-390 or
'390A. Serious bandcruising? SP-600. SSB? 75A-4 or SX-115. Actually,
it's surprising how easily the crusty old 75A-1 will tune in SSB by
backing off the RF Gain a bit and retuning. Almost as fast as
switching to LSB.
The crappiest audio of any receiver I have is the AN/GRR-5 that sits
by my bed. But it's cool looking and the purring of the vibrator
supply makes up for it, at least a bit. It was supposed to be my
garage radio, but I just couldn't bring myself to leave it out there.
Now, if you want head-scratching material, the SX-115 and SX-88 rate
at the top. Both are excellent receivers, well made, nice sounding and
easy to use. But the 115 is ham bands only, doesn't have 160, and you
have to select which AM sideband you want to hear. It's rock-stable
and pleasant to listen to, but 6kcs is it for bandwidth. And the 88 is
just....nice, but expensive! SX-115s seem to have made a big
correction in recent years, though. $500-$1K seems more the norm, and
a long ways from the $6K days a few years ago.
I'm happy as a clam with my SX-28A.
