[Hallicrafters] Another Sucker is born (Only if you Allow it to
Happen)

I must add my 2 cents here, I have purchased at least (4) pieces of
Hallicrafters gear from this guy without any problems. Good communications
and reasonably priced.
Avoiding this type of problem is also the responsibility of the buyer. Ask
many questions; ask for more pictures (he offers that) and most importantly,
KNOW THE EQUIPMENT YOU ARE BUYING!
Subtle defects can be noticed when looking at the images. Most people will
casually look at the image, read the description and that's good enough for
them. But, if you're not familiar with the equipment, how could you
possibly buy it without examining it in detail? If you are really
interested, some detective work is required for a good purchase.
I will usually download the image into a editing program and blow it up for
really close looks. I recently was interested in another SX-17. I noticed
however, the SX-17 "S" meter pointer was all the way to the right. To most
people, this would not mean anything, but I sensed a problem.
The "S" meter needle all the way to the right is normal when the receiver is
not powered up. However, the dial lights were on (Clue). Looking closer at
the image, I checked the other control positions especially the RF gain
control and AVC switch.
The RF gain control and the AVC switch will cause the needle to go all the
way to the right when powered up. Nothing else would cause this in normal
operation.
To make a long story short, noticing the needle to the right and the AVC
switch and RF gain control were in the proper position indicated to me the
"S" meter was bad. I was correct, the seller did not know since he was one
of those "I don't know anything about this stuff" people. I did not
purchase the receiver.
