How about a first name, sir? A Ham or SWL devotee or just trying to
recapture that fleeting youth?

Not to worry too much, such crisis are common during menopause! Yes, men
have it too! No known cases of PMS to date, fortunately! It also provides we
males with a wonderful reason, supported by medical research which
supposedly makes it a fact, to wander down memory lane with credit card in
one hand and shopping list in the other!

You are going to have to be a bit more precise as to what you want, want to
use it for etc. Such as, do you want the factory PM-23 speaker? I am
assuming that you are not a Ham radio operator, so if you desire to use it
for short-wave listening, the external speaker will really make the Jazz
from the Voice Of Russia, Classical and Folk music concerts from Germany and
the excellent Spanish music from Radio Exterior De Espana or Radio Habanna,
Cuba sound terrific! If you can not find a factory speaker, there are
alternatives by other companies that will do nicely. Probably cost less too!

There is a 'lot' more to rebuilding a receiver than just replacing the old
capacitors. Let me reccomend the web site of Al Parker, W8UT in NC, as he
has refurbished several SX-28's and has some very helpful instructional
articles and numerous photos. Al is one of the finest Technicians I have
ever known and what he says is pretty much the final word on the topic. Very
bright guy!

This is not to take anything away from the many other tech types on this
fantastic list, who range from very good to outstanding also.

Depending on the conditional and refurb work done, prices on a complete and
working set partly redone vary from $350-$800+ without the PM-23 external
speaker. Prices on the speaker vary from $125-$350. You would be well
advised to take your time, shop around for several months and not rush into
a deal you will live to regret! The more you know about the receiver, or
whatever the old rig is, the better off you will be! It will help keep you
from buying a set with a known defect that you may not be aware of, from
buying a nice looking cabinet with a very nice front panel which hides a
chassis rejected by a landfill! So look around, learn all you can, as this
will be a sizeable investment. Spend wisely!

Happy hunting and enjoy one of the nicest sounding receivers that any
company ever designed and marketed. A true classic!
