[Hallicrafters] R-274/FRR Capacitor question

Hi Glenn,
Wow, what a nice gift. It's a fairly scarce radio (I won't use the
term R at RE as often seen on ebay). As you may know, it was built to the
same electrical specs as the Hammarlund SP-600's. In my opinion, they are
better made, much closer to what you'd expect from Mil Specs, and I
really like the SP-600's. I obtained one in Sept. '04, and got into it
fairly quickly to see what was different, etc. They are also know as
SX-73, and some were labeled that for sale to the public.
There are no BBOD capacitors in there (black beauties of death), but a
lot of "postage stamp" paper caps, almost all of which were leaky in mine.
The 4 electroytic filter caps in the B+ line were all bad, had high ESR,
and I replaced them before I put power on it.
I made a list of all the capacitors that I did replace (8-10 or so, +
filters) by schematic no., and can copy that for you if you'd like. I
just now realize that I haven't put up a page on this receiver on my
website, probably due to travel right after purchase. I'll try to get a
round tuit soon.
Since yours is working, you may not have any pressing problems other
than reduced performance, but everything is now over 50yrs of age, and
many electrolytics of that vintage have at least started to go bad, and
many of the paper caps also. I'm not aware, by leaky memory, of any that
could cause major damage to other components it they fail, but it would be
a good idea to give it a thoro insection and testing.
If I can be of any further help please drop me a line.

Al, W8UT
