Sometimes I just cain't resist adding my nickel's worth; this is one of 'em.
(Note I haven't read past Vol 25, Issue 39 yet; I'm just recalcitrant.)

a) "R" was already taken, so they picked "S". hmm. OK.
  or
b) it REALLY meant "Selectivity". (hey..that sounds Good..)
  (thank you both, EXcellent brainstorming)

Or...
c) How about just plain, old "Super"?
As in Superman, Superheterodyne or Supercalifragilisticexpialodocious?
  or
d) Maybe the "S" came from an inspiration...
what to use to designate our great, new stuff?

Hmm. STUFF. Great! Call it 'S'-something-or-other.

     Hallicrafters Stuff. It's da best.

  73, Terry B

(well, it Could have happened like that)
