My first amp was a 4-400A right out of the ARRL Handbook. Originally it was
Class C but when I aquired a Heath SB-10 we redesigned it to also run in
AB1.
Bill Orr, W6SAI publushed booklets on running the 4- series in GG. Check
for the booklets in this series plus some of the old ARRL Handbooks and
Editors and Engineers Handbooks edited by W6SAI.
If you are an ARRL member you can do a search on the members only page.
Really nice and includes Ham radio magazine.
The best article on 4-1000 GG amps was the article in the early 1970's by
W0SYK. Using a pair of the tubes the input is 50 ohms...I think it was 73
Magazine.
I have stored at another hams place a pair of 4-400A's in GG for 160 built
in a Viking 500 box. The ham who built it was a big 160 meter Dxer and
since he also had a Drake L-4B he used the PS for the Drake and the exact
plugs. Its unused since I do not have the Drake PS. It also takes 150
watts plus drive for a KW.
