Hello Roy,
Read the AACS article you mentioned on the Hallicrafters group in QST;
interesting stuff and an area of WWII I've taken an interest in. Was a bit
sceptical of the B-17s being attacked by ME109s off the Scottish coast as
this would be well out of fighter range from Occupied Europe, especially on
the west coast where most ferried aircraft headed for. More likely it was
longer range aircraft from Norway. I think there's a similar story in a
wartime film (name escapes me) with James Cagney as the star, where a
squadron of unarmed Lockheed Electras (Hudsons in the RAF) are attacked and
escape by Cagney ramming one of the fighters. There was some discussion
recently on another list about "Island In The Sky", a John Wayne film
re-released on DVD about a C-47 downed in Labrador whilst flying the polar
route, quite a bit of authentic radio gear in that film!
I have a book, published just post-war, called "War Below Zero" that covers
the loss of the B-17s and some P-38s on the Greenland icecap and the
recovery of the crews, quite an adventure and not without loss on the
rescuers part. I believe that those aircraft are what is now known as "The
Lost Squadron" and there have been several attempts to recover them from
100s of feet below the ice, only a P-38 being saved up to now. Anyway, a
fascinating side-show of WWII and one where radio was absolutely vital.
