Good "poop" from Roger - filled in some gaps on the RADAR story.  On a
recent visit to the UK, was in Dover, Kent, and I'm almost sure that the big
tower I saw on the Cliff coast is one of the old CHAIN HOME ones.

Interesting, is that the British had developed some pulse-output tubes that
had their vacuum maintained by pumps, so that they could disassemble them
for replacement of the filament - that's using your noggin.
