You are correct. $3k or more for a decent one. Assuming, that is, that you can find someone who has one and wants to sell it.
This was my "El Dorado" for my boatanchor collection, and I am glad to have one, expensive as it was.
By the way, making one work is another challenge. They are 10/10 on the "difficult to fix and align" scale.
There are many unique parts in them, and (of course) there are few if any hangar queens to rob. The germanium transistors, however, are gettable in slightly different physical transistor packages.
You have to be pretty serious or very lucky to acquire one of these. Maybe both.
I would steer most people to a KWM-2 or perhaps an SR-150 from this vintage.
They look great, by the way. Lots of chrome and little bits of color. Beats out most everything on my shelves.
