Terry B's questions of April 21 concerning contact cleaning revived some old
memories. When working with computers during the late 1960's - early 1970's
we often cured their random gliches by removing their circuit boards, which
were secured by edge connectors, and working over the contact strips on the
board with good old-fashioned Pink Pearl office erasers. This technique was
effective for removing films and airborne grime that could inhibit the 5 volt
logic levels used in that type of equipment. I have also used other pencil
erasers to good effect together with careful use of an ink eraser for more
stubborn films. In extreme instances I feel that very fine sandpaper, such as
modeler's sanding sticks, should work well for very dirty contacts if used with
care. Do not, under any circumstances, use emery paper or polishing paper since
these products will remove metal, and the resulting loose particles can
raise all manner of havoc when turned loose in electronic circuits.
On another topic, not necessarily Hallicrafters related, I recently acquire
a Harvey-Wells Bandmasre Z-Match antenna tuner at a barn sale. This tuner is
supposed to handle transmitter inputs up to 500 watts. However, since we only
get what we pay for, the unit appears to be missing a 340 pf tuning
capacitor. This capacitor is one of two used to tune the unit and is mounted isolated
from ground. If anyone out there in Halli-land could point me in the
direction of a replacement for my missing capacitor I would be most appreciative.
Thanks for any help,
