I recently posted such an ad on this list, and find humor in your
characterizing me as discourteous, sans common sense, and a "bad amateur"
for effectively for paying a commission to sell an item on eBay, rather than
posting it here for free.

By your logic, realtors and the Multiple Listing Service (and the cost of
their provided services) should not exist, as anyone could pay to place a
"for sale by owner" ad in a paper. Oooops .... there I go again - paying
for an ad when I might likely find a place on the web to place such an ad
for free. I'm sure my home would be whisked off the market with a
homes at mailman.abc.net ad.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but get real - if at the end of the day you pay a
little but make correspondingly more as a seller, or find exactly what you
are looking for as a buyer - from a seller you can trust (read "feedback") -
the economics of that transaction is pretty sound.

The fact is, eBay is an accepted medium for the sale and purchase of goods.
That's why it is so successful - it works. It's particularly effective when
you have an uncommon item: you can usually depend on the market to tell you
a fair price, rather than just guessing at something, or placing all your
confidence and your wallet in the hands of the opinion of a few.

There are good deals to be had on ebay as well - most folks who use that
service find one on occasion. I know I have.

" ... get back to Hallicrafters"? Curious comment. Buying and selling
Hallicrafters gear is very much a part of "Hallicrafters". If you are using
the gear, you likely bought it sometime. And, I'll bet you've sold a piece
or two along the way. It's myopic and arbitrary to draw a line excluding a
particular trade venue from the eyes of those who adore the equipment
available there, and absolutely pompous to criticize those flexible enough
to adopt it and share a "for auction" with members of this list.

Anyone with a small amount of courtesy and common sense would not think
of posting a link to a site that charges a fee to sell things when this
reflector does not.
Then , when you get burned by buying something on the site and paying
for the privilege of using that site, posting a gripe on this reflector
and letting everyone know how foolish you were to use that site in the
first place.
I guess it is like amateur radio in general, Part 97 does not cover
exactly every aspect of operation, you should just follow "good amateur
practice".
First you need some "good amateurs" to follow "good amateur practice"
Now can we get back to hallicrafters?
Just my .02
Thanks, George W5GRG
