Larry,
The dial is silver plated brass, with the exception of the knob in the 
center, which is nickel plated brass.  A bit of grocery store variety 
silver polish did the trick for mine.  If you need to reblack the 
lettering in the embossed areas, you can use a paint stick from Antique 
Electronic Supply.  Incidentally, I have seen pictures of an SX-17 dial 
that had been desilvered and was simply polished brass.  That sure gave 
the radio a unique look!
