Bill,
I have heard of a mod, originally military in origin, later civilian, that did
provide for such an external bulb with cover that directed the light for better
dial illumination. The original purpose was due to complaints of poor darkened
room, or poorly lit environmental, conditions.

I have a very nice SX-17 receiver and am quite familiar with the receiver.
I was looking at one of the more popular BA sites and there is an SX-17 for
sale that I noticed had a strange protuberance to the upper right of the
main tuning dial. Not knowing what it was, I read some of the descriptive
text about the receiver and the seller states "this one has the optional
dial light" installed.
I was unaware the SX-17 was sold with an optional dial light for the main
tuning dial. A nice idea but, was such an option available? The only dial
lights I am aware of are the "S" meter and the Band spread dial. Anyone
know the answer to this one. Chucks book does not note this.
