The manual says the S-meter is disabled when in CW mode.  The BFO 
position disables the AVC if I'm not mistaken.

By the way, my wife asked which radio I wanted to take to the nursing 
home when the time comes.  I told her it would be the SX-71 if there was 
room, otherwise, the S-20R.
