Hi Charlie,
I have two SX-71s, and a third which I am borrowing. All have black dials.
One of mine is Run 3 (I think) and the other Run 4. The white dials were
on the early versions (Run 1?). There is a white dial SX-71 for sale on
Ebay right now, and sure enough it has the metal rings in the knobs.
Some people say that the metal knob rings were on all the knobs, but
not fixed well, so easily fell out.
But I have yet to see an SX-71 with a black dial that has the metal rings
in the knobs ...
