[Hallicrafters] Replacing Caps: Right way vs aesthetical way

Cut the lead of the old cap off about 1/8" from the solder joint. Lay the
lead from the new cap alongside the clipped lead and apply enough solder to
flow over both leads and onto the tube socket pin. As everyone knows, a
glossy soldered connection is a good connection, so use enough solder and
enough heat to do it right.
By attempting to remove the old component there is no telling what you might
do to the socket pin and other components connected to it. Some
"technicians" can be pretty ham-fisted!!
Let's use a little bit of common sense here and not get carried away with
trying to be "aesthetically correct". You want the radio to work properly,
so do the job right-dress the new leads correctly, solder well and stop
worrying about the nitty-gritty like removing all of the old leads.
I have done a pile of boatanchors this way, as have many others, and the
results speak for themselves.
