[Hallicrafters] Repairing Hallicrafters cases

The Squadron Green putty will work, but it is very
fragile when used alone to fill a "large" hole. You'll
need to put something behind it, like a piece of
plastic -- perhaps plastic dowel -- the same size as
the hole; then putty it over and VERY carefully drill
it as desired.

And this may not work the first time you try it.

A far better product than Squadron putty is an epoxy
product called Poxy Pack. This stuff is a quick-mix,
quick-use epoxy -- sets real fast, like 4 to 5
minutes, then takes a few hours to cure really hard.
It comes with both parts in a small plastic cup about
the size of a package of Solder Wick. Pull the paper
top off the cup, scoop out the hardener (around the
rim) with a supplied popsicle-stick-like
mixer/applicator, and blend the hardener into the
epoxy which is in the center. About a minute of
mixing usually works; then use it quick. Just fill
the hole. Once the stuff cures it can be trimmed or
filed or sanded, or you can even use Squadron putty on
top of it and "pretty it up." Then drill to suit.

Be sure to sand the paint off around the hole you are
trying to fill (from the bottom) and get some light
scratches in the metal to give some "teeth" for the
epoxy to cling to.

This product usually comes in a container of 10
individual cups, with the mixer/applicator sticks. I
have used it many times for various electronic
applications and it does work very well. You might
find it at hardware stores or building supply places.

Truth be told, Skip, if all you have is some screw
holes, if it were my radio I'd just fill them with
screws. No repair is ever going to look truly right
on this perforated metal, and may actually call more
attention to the blemish.
