Hi Brent,

Sounds as if the IF is trying to take off. Or,
perhaps, the mixer.

Have you tried different tubes?

Have you tried de-oxing the grounds? Make very sure
that this is done. You can use De-OxIt but my
favorite elixer is PB Blaster, a very strong
penetrating oil sold in automotive stores. Liquid
Wrench will also work.

Neither of these should be hosed" into the rig as they
may attack certain kinds of insulation, and keep them
totally away from dials!

The correct way to do this, is to hold a cotton swab
against the spray head of the can and GENTLY press the
head, to saturate the swab. Apply the elixer to all
ground points -- that is, to all the rivets holding
tube sockets and terminal strips.

Use a dry swab to clean up the excess.

Allow the oil to wick into the rivets. Let the stuff
"sit" for a day or so before trying the radio.

Be sure you use these things with PLENTY of
ventilation. PB Blaster is some powerful stuff.

Also, of course, check your solder joints on the
grounds. You might even want to re-solder the old
connections that you didn't rework during the
recapping process. You might find that one or more
have gone funky over the years. Get the old, oxidized
solder out, for sure.

This may be redundant, but just in case, here's a word
to the wise: An acey-deucey radio, especially with a
metal case, is a deathtrap. ALWAYS use an isolation
transformer. If you don't have one, get one.

(I wonder how many people these things have killed?
Consider this scenario: S-38 receiver, plugged in the
wrong way; cathode-keyed transmitter with a "hot key."
 Sha-ZAM!)
