I suppose the only caveat is that should you only own one scope, and it is
broken, you likely would need to borrow one to properly diagnose and repair
the broken one!
The older Tek solid state scopes are available at quite reasonable prices
now. And they are durable. I have a Tek 465 portable that I bought
well-used from my employer in 1980 when the field service side of the
business shrunk a bit. It's been my primary troubleshooting tool for 25
years, and the only component that has ever worn out is the foam fan filter
on the rear panel.
The older tube scopes by Tek can also serve well, the tubes themselves are
the most likely thing to wear out over extended time, but tube replacements
are generally available. If you don't mind the size and weight, a Tek tube
scope can often be had for next to nothing at hamfests. If you can power it
up, and get a visible, bright trace, you likely have a fully working unit.
There is lots of help available in Boatanchor-Land should you need
assistance with one.
If you go scope shopping, I do suggest at least obtaining one with a
calibrated, triggered sweep. I have an Eico 460 but don't find it that
useful other than for monitoring general AF/RF waveform shape. It's more of
a conversation piece as they were quite popular in their day as a low cost
scope. A newer scope with a reliable triggered, calibrated sweep and
calibrated vertical channel can be a waveform monitor, AC/DC voltmeter,
frequency counter, etc. - fullfilling nearly every function for most
troubleshooting work except that of a signal generator.
